Warbler in the Void original colored pencil drawing

This piece set off the whole Straddling the Void series. I just decided to try something different with my new colored pencils, and out came a fascinating glimpse into the nature of my subconscious. For decades I’ve had an often debilitating fear of drawing, which is pretty awful to have as an artist, especially as an artist who used to love drawing. There are so many days where the thought of sitting down to draw makes me physically ill. Creating this work was one brave attempt to overcome this, but in essence every single piece I make feels like the same battle. The warbler is emerging from one world and heading toward another, emerging from the dark woods to a more heavenly realm with white clouds and calming blues. This is me coaxing myself out of my own trauma toward a better place.

I used this piece as the logo for my old art business, Birds For Brains, that’s how much I love it! May this hang on your wall to remind you of your delicate bravery, that you are always in the process of healing and traveling toward a better future.

This is an original drawing made with Caran d'Ache Pablo colored pencils on paper. It measures 8x8 inches and ships unframed.
